Recently we had the privilege of sitting down with Josh Riekena of Country Financial to discuss a topic that hits close to home for many: renters insurance.

Renters insurance may sound to some like just another bureaucratic hoop to jump through, but this kind of coverage is more important than you might think. Our team recently spoke to a number of renters who had lost their homes to a fire—a tragedy that could have been even more painful had they not been covered by renters insurance.

Josh understands this all too well, which is why he’s so passionate about helping people get the necessary coverage. According to him, one of the main concerns people have about renters insurance is, of course, the cost. Thankfully, renters insurance is quite affordable—usually ranging from just $10 to $20 per month.

For that small fee, recipients are covered for both liability and property damage. This means renters insurance not only protects you in the event that someone is injured on your property, but also in the event that your personal belongings are damaged or lost as a result of a qualifying hardship—like a fire. Josh recommends renters seek out a $300,000 policy for the liability component of renters insurance, and a replacement value policy for the property damage component.

You can never be sure what the future holds.

It’s also good to note that your policy may vary depending on the kind of dwelling you occupy. Brick homes, for example, may carry a slightly different rate than a traditional frame-built home. However, the most important factor in your policy’s structure will be how many possessions you own. If you’ve got a lot of personal belongings, you’ll likely need a higher level of coverage.

No one assumes tragedy will strike them and their family, but, unfortunately, you can never be sure what the future holds.
