Metamora Fun Facts:

The name of the town comes from the play “Metamora: Or, The Last of the Wampanoags.” Originally called Hanover because the settlers of the area were from Hanover, New Hampshire. Due to post office regulations, the name needed to be changed to have a unique name (Hanover was already in use). The permanent name was chosen in 1845.

Metamora was the county seat of Woodford County from 1843 until 1896. Between those times, Abraham Lincoln practiced law at the county courthouse, handling at least 70 cases there.

The annual festival, Old Settler’s Day, was originally started as a reunion picnic for the Woodford County Old Settler’s organization.
